How it works
How it works.
From the idea you already have to a project in your community, in four steps.
-
Start with an idea
Consider what you would like to see change, or begin, in a Native community you belong to or care about. A project need not be large; it needs to be genuine and well considered.
-
Fill out the application
Tell us a little about yourself and why you are the right person to carry this out, then describe your project: its name, the Native community it will serve, what you plan to do, and, most importantly, how it will help that community. You may also note what the funds would pay for, and share a photo, plan, or letter of support.
-
We read your application
Your application comes directly to Dawn Grants. If you have questions at any point, you are always welcome to write to us.
-
Begin your project
Grantees lead their own projects. If you would like support in putting yours into action, you need only ask.
How it works
Tips for a strong application
- Be specific about who your project will serve and how their lives will be better for it.
- Tell us what makes you the right person to carry it out.
- Write in your own words, as you would explain the project in conversation. Plain, clear language is best.
- If you are unsure about anything, please write to us before you apply.

Does it cost anything to apply?
No. Applying for a Dawn Grants microgrant is free.
How much is a microgrant?
Grants are up to $5,000, for one small project that serves a Native community.
Who can apply?
Anyone may apply, for a project anywhere in the United States. Every application should clearly explain how the project will help a Native community, and include a little about you and why you are the right person to carry it out.
Is support available once I receive a grant?
Yes, if you would like it. Grantees lead their own projects, and support in putting a project into action is available wherever it is welcome. It is never required.
May I ask questions before I apply?
Of course. Please send us a message through the contact page, and we will reply to you.
